There’s a risk the value of your investment could go down as well as up, unlike in a cash ISA. They are good for longer term savings, like a deposit for a house or a rainy day fund.

Many stocks and shares ISA providers also give you a choice of risky or less risky funds, and leave the investing up to a professional manager. You typically pay a small fee for the account and the managers.

But often it’s hard to really explore how it works until after you’ve signed up. So we’ve looked at three popular stocks and shares ISA providers in detail:

Start simple with Fidelity, become adventurous over time

Fidelity allows you to pick thousands of investment funds, but timid investors can also park their money in cash until they feel ready to take the plunge.

Be a nosey parker and find out what other investors are doing

Like Nutmeg, it has quizzes that can help you pick the right investments for your needs, and you can also find out what other people in your situation have done. You can then choose a fund suited to your level of risk, and you can also choose between cheaper or more expensive options.

You can also use Fidelity’s HeadStart service to pull together a whole investment portfolio. This takes a big picture view of your investments and picks several funds according to how much risk you want to take.
