Matt Rea’s CFL draft selection helped

A change in the CFL’s residency rule led to the Saskatchewan Roughriders drafting fullback Matt Rea.

The Riders selected Rea in the fourth round (35th overall) out of Michigan State University during Tuesday’s CFL draft. It was during Rea’s senior year at MSU that he learned he was eligible for the CFL draft under the new collective bargaining agreement. Prospects simply have to be born in Canada to be eligible for the draft.

Rea met those requirements because he was born in London, Ont., on March 25, 1991. He dreamt of playing in the NFL growing up in the United States, until being told by some Canadian players on the Spartans that he was eligible for the CFL draft.

"They told me I should take a shot and reach out to some people,’ Rea said Wednesday from his home in Rochester. "I talked to one of the guys in the CFL and I told him about my situation. He told me to send over a copy of my passport and
