Though Lorenzen never competed in more than 29 races in a season, he won 26 times in 158 starts, a remarkable winning percentage of .1646.

Time to lift ban on uranium mining near Grand Canyon

In the past decade, interest in mining for uranium has surged, with prices for the metal soaring in world markets a few years ago. Uranium prospecting and mining project plans have been popping up like jack rabbits across the western United States.

But for at least one of America’s iconic natural landmarks, the Obama administration has put the brakes on thousands of new mining plans or claims. In 2009, it blocked claims for uranium and other mining on about 1

Such fears are overblown, industry experts say, with predictions of only 1 in 10 mining claims, if that, being developed into a mine.

"The uranium mining industry in this area has had a stellar environmental track record," says Pamela Hill, executive director of the American Clean Energy Resources Trust, a coalition of uranium exploration and mining companies based in Kanab, Utah. "A lot of these concerns are without basis in science or history of uranium mining in this area."

May 4 will mark the end of a public comment period on the environmental impact statement that has been drawn up about mining by the Grand Canyon. A decision by the government on whether to lift its moratorium is expected by July 20.

Even with the Obama administration’s moratorium, one mining claim near the Grand Canyon, deemed to have existing rights, was allowed to go forward, and a mine is now in operation. Also, as many as 11 existing uranium claims near the Grand Canyon could be eligible for permits whether or not newer claims are blocked, the BLM says.

Although the Obama administration has not blocked mining claims in other areas, such claims are just starting to reach fruition. Earlier this month, a uranium mine in Wyoming announced its opening. Other sites are expected to be developed, líka, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Congress has been watching closely. Some lawmakers have zeroed in on the 1872 Mining Law, under which the US government does not receive any mineral royalties.

Earlier this month, legislation was introduced by Reps. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujn, both Democrats from New Mexico, to shift regulation of uranium mining from "the antiquated 1872 Mining Law" to the Mineral Leasing Act. The latter would allow uranium mining to be managed through a competitive leasing program.

Others also worry that most of America’s best uranium mining prospects including those by the Grand Canyon are now controlled by Canadian, Korean, rússneska, Rússi, rússneskur, and other foreign companies. Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the NRC, assured Barrasso in a letter that ARMZ had not applied for an export license, so it could not send any

ACT region spoilt for choice when it comes to pristine fishing spots

For recreational anglers, the capital region is an amazing place to live. Within a two hour drive we have more than 20 species of fish that we can catch on lures, flies and bait and that’s not counting the offshore possibilities.

Why am I telling a local audience how wonderful the capital region is? I’ve been living in Hanoi for the past three months and one of the great things about travelling is coming back and seeing your home town with fresh eyes.

Vietnam helped me to appreciate things I take for granted in Australia. In Hanoi, the angling options are largely restricted to the freshwater lakes across the city which act much like Canberra’s ”pollution control ponds”, and the vast and imposing Red River which, as the name suggests, carries coloured silt down from the mountains. I missed the clear waters of home, and wanted to rediscover the many wonderful fisheries on our doorstep as quickly as possible. So last week I set out with my fishing buddy (and fellow Flick and Fly Journal blogger) Lee Georgeson, to see what we could catch in just three days.

The adventure started solo on Lake Burley Griffin. I launched the kayak at dawn and peppered lures into the nooks and darkest underwater caves in search of the mighty Murray cod, or possibly a golden perch. Unfortunately the big storms we had a few weeks ago have left the water discoloured and the visibility poor. Not even the hordes of introduced English perch could find the lures.

It had gone through over two years of underperformance compared to some of its peers. Sikka’s appointment was a surprise and a relief. Surprise because of his background in software products that was very different from the services space at Infosys. Relief because many wanted a fresh face at the helm. In the four months since Sikka’s appointment, the Infosys stock has risen significantly. In an exclusive interview to TOI, Sikka says he feels a tremendous burden of expectation:

What are your thoughts on the first four months at Infosys?

The atmosphere is electric. People are so excited, there is so much positive energy that has been built up it’s difficult to describe. Never seen anything like this. Yes, may be in the trip to Australia with (PM Narendra) Modi. But that was little different. I walk into these

I have to think more about this. But the propensity to change, the desire to improve is awesome in Infosys. Over the last year there was this turmoil, people leaving. Our development centre (DC) in Chennai told me they would be the best embracer of artificial intelligence among DCs in Infosys. You don’t normally find large companies embrace change this way.

Part of it comes from our education, which is at the heart of Infosys. Our Mysore training campus is so awesome. We can train on such a massive scale 16,000 trainees at a time for 23 vikur. Mr Murthy used to call it learnability. Education is in the mindset of employees, they are keen to learn.

What do you see as your big challenges?

One is that the company processes have not kept pace with its massive growth. Another is that we have to improve the confidence of the youngsters.

Do you think this will result in some confusion?

The results of the change will take a while. But the mindset change will happen instantaneously. The industry has been in a downward spiral,

Prof Mashelkar (R A Mashelkar, former head of CSIR) used to have this beautiful line: "Do more with less for more". I want a much more productive, innovative Infosys, a company that customers think of when they think of their next generation problems. Not just for staff augmentation that’s such a horrible idea.

How much of your US stint has shaped your thinking?

I don’t know. I have now lived 27 years in the US, and 20 years in India. So a lot of that influence is there.

Do you think it’s possible to have a startup culture in a big company with 165,000 people?

I think Infosys is a 165,000 people startup. We genuinely believe that. You have to have the mindset that the world can be significantly better than it is. You must have the imagination of what it could be like, the knowledge of how that could be made to happen. It is a borderline irrational conviction that you can do it.

But how do you encourage entrepreneurship in a company that is so big? It is a legacy company.

I did two startups and doing a startup is an incredibly noble thing. It is one of the greatest experiences in life. And those people who can do it based on their life situation, must try doing a startup. But entrepreneurship is not the domain only of startups. It can be done anywhere.

In SAP, when I was trying to do Hana (the in memory database), people said these guys have lost their minds, they must be on drugs, they said SAP will never build a database, let alone a next generation database. But we did. My team had that culture. We are doing the same thing in Infosys.

A team in Pune is working on AI (artificial intelligence), creating a natural language understanding system that automatically mines lots of text to find leads for the insurance industry. If there is a hurricane somewhere, or if a child is born, the system recognizes it as a lead for an insurance company, and provides the information to an agent. This kid came to me wanting to do something in digital agriculture because five generations of his family have been in agriculture. My wish is to see that we have 165,000 such entrepreneurs. We have a building in Hyderabad, it is water cooled innovated by our own people. It consumes 30% of the energy that normal buildings do. Google sent people there to see how it works. We’ll soon have 20 LEED Platinum rated buildings. We are probably the world’s No. 1 company in sustainable buildings. Our Mysore campus pays for itself. All this because the infrastructure team has entrepreneurial thinking.

You opened up Twitter and

My advice to the Prime Minister is that when we think of ‘Make in India’, we have to think in terms of software. Software is changing everything. It’s a software defined world.
